Windows PE for Windows

Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE) is a lightweight version of Windows used for the deployment of PCs. If you simply need to determine whether you are running WinPE or not, you can check for the presence of the key MiniNT in. Windows PE includes built-in features intended to prevent its use as a client operating system (and thus ward off licensing violations).

我很小可是我很强大 - WinPE的简单介绍

Recently, in working with a client who was using the Windows PE environment created with Windows 8.1 ADK, we had a server go down that had a corrupt Windows installation.  It was decided to simply boot the server in a PE environment to copy off necessary files that needed to be available as soon as possible.  The files in question were on a separate “Data” partition.  The plan was to copy the files we needed from there and then simply reload Windows.

This wasn’t the way we wanted to do it, however, the box was running Windows Server 2003 so we needed to get off 2K3 with the end of life rapidly approaching.  A fresh install of Windows Server 2012 R2 was the way we decided to go.  In the meantime, I created a Windows PE boot disk using the Deployment and Imaging Tools environment.  This was a no frills boot CD with just default configuration besides added drivers for storage and network.

In trying Windows PE for Windows copy files using XCOPY or RoboCopy it was very cumbersome trying to command line copy bits and pieces of the folder structure that was all over the place.  A GUI file explorer would have been nice!  Well, let’s see how to add one.

Praim Remote Management

Add GUI file explorer to Windows PE environment

One of the easiest, free, and lightweight solutions to adding a GUI file explorer is to use the Freecommander utility which has a free 32bit “portable” version that can be included in your Windows PE boot environment.  Take a look at the screenshots below which are taken from a PE environment.

You have to go in and tell FreeCommander that you want it to be the master of Deletes, Copies, or Moves, however, once you do this it is persistent throughout your PE session.

So the steps to include this in a Windows PE environment:

  • Download the 32bit portable environment
  • Mount your 32bit Windows PE environment boot.wim
  • Copy this freecommander portable folder to your mounted 32bit windows pe environment
  • Unmount and commit the PE environment
  • Use the madewinpemedia command to make either a bootable USB QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions Free Download or an ISO that you can burn to a CD/DVD

Let’s look at a refresher on how to mount and unmount an image:

dism /mount-wim /wimfile:"c:path_to_your_boot.wim" /index:1 /mountdir:c:mount

After you have mounted the image to the path you choose such as c:mount you then simply copy the Freecommander folder into the root of that directory.

After copying Freecommander and/or other tools of your choosing, to unmount:

DISM /Unmount-Wim /Mountdir:C:MyDirMount /Commit

After you have unmounted and committed the changes you have made, you are ready to create your media.

USB Boot

makewinpemedia /ufd c:path_to_your_win81adk g:

This again would be the path to your win81adk winpe_x86 folder and the g: drive in the example above, is the letter of your USB drive.

After you have created your USB boot drive and booted into the Windows PE environment, you can then simply launch FreeCommander from the boot environment.

Notice, in the cmd.exe above, we have simply changed to the FreeCommander directory and launched the application executable – FreeCommander.exe

Final Thoughts

Adding a GUI file explorer to Windows PE environment need not be difficult.  Using the Windows 8.1 ADK and the FreeCommander portable application, you can easily add a GUI to your Windows PE environment, which can be very handy in situations where Avant Browser for Windows 10 are having to copy many different directories from many different parts of the directory tree.

Windows PE (or Windows Preinstallation Environment) is a scaled-down version of Windows. This custom environment Windows PE for Windows useful in an emergency, letting you run Windows commands or custom, third-party tools to resolve issues with your Windows installation or, in a worst-case scenario, to recover your files.

There are several third-party Windows PE rescue disks that you can download and use, like Hiren’s BootCD PE. If you’re wary about trusting a third-party solution, especially with potential piracy issues, you can build your own using Win10XPE. Let’s walk you through how to create your own Windows PE rescue disk.

Creating a Windows PE Rescue Disk

To create a Windows PE rescue disk, you’ll need a recent copy of the Windows 10 installation media. Microsoft provides Windows 10 ISOs for download, but you’ll need to change your browser user agent to Chrome OS or Android first to be able to download the file from the Microsoft website.

  • If you have a Windows 10 ISO downloaded, you’ll need to download the latest version of Win10XPE next. Extract your Windows 10 ISO Windows PE for Windows the compressed Win10XPE 7Z file using 7-Zip, then run the Win10XPE.exe file.
  • When you first launch Win10XPE, you’ll need to point it to the location of your extracted Windows 10 installation files. Click Select the Windows 10 Source Folder in the main Win10XPE menu.
  • Once the Windows 10 installation files have been loaded into Win10XPE, you can begin customizing the tools you want to include with your WinPE disk. In the left-hand menu, click the + arrow next to Apps to expand that section.
  • From here, work through each of the sub-categories to select which tools you want to add. Win10XPE will use a default configuration, selecting tools it believes you’ll find useful. You can leave these as they are, but to add them to your environment, click the checkbox next to each option.
  • You’ll also need to modify the Build Core configuration. This sets various settings, like keyboard layout and locale, for your WinPE build. Click on Build Core in the left-hand side menu.
  • The default Build Core menu configuration should work for most users. If you want to use a wireless network connection in WinPE, however, be sure to enable the Network Drivers, Network Additions and Microsoft .NETFx4 checkboxes in the Main Interface tab.
  • You can also add custom files to your WinPE environment. These could be portable tools, like those available for download at PortableApps, or additional configuration files. To set Win10XPE to add these, click on the Add Debut Video Capture 5.41 License Key - Crack Key For U Custom Folder checkbox, then click the Open Custom Folder button to copy your files to that location.
  • The final Utilities menu shouldn’t require configuration for most users. If you do need to configure this section, for instance, to enable the .NET Framework 2.0-3.5, click on the + arrow next to Utilities in the left-hand side menu.
  • Once your Win10XPE configuration is ready and your files are in place, you can build it. Click the Play button in the top-right to begin the build process.

Win10XPE turns your custom Windows PE environment into an ISO file. Once the build process is complete, you can flash the ISO file contents to a USB flash drive using Rufus.

Etcher is a popular alternative to Rufus, but this has known problems with flashing Windows 10 ISOs to flash drives. In this case, it’s better to use Rufus.

Copying Windows PE To a USB Flash Drive

To flash your custom Windows PE ISO to a USB flash drive, you’ll need to have downloaded the latest version of Rufus. It doesn’t require installation, so just launch the Rufus.exe file once it’s downloaded.

  • First, select your flash drive from the Device drop-down menu, then select your ISO by clicking the Select button next to the Boot Selection menu.
  • Once you select your ISO file, Rufus will automatically configure to match the most appropriate settings for it. Once you’re ready to begin flashing, click START at the bottom.

Once the Rufus flashing process has completed, reboot your PC with your flash drive plugged in. The custom Windows PE environment should then boot, allowing you to begin recovering your Windows installation.

Using The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

If you’re looking for a built-in solution, Windows 10 users can use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) instead. While WinPE is customizable, WinRE is a set-in-stone solution that includes tools to repair your file system, bandicam key - Free Activators Windows to a previous backup, restore Windows to factory settings, and more.

The benefit of the Windows Recovery Environment over the Windows Preinstallation Environment is all Windows 10 users have the WinRE tool installed already.

  • If you’ve been able to boot into Windows 10, you can boot to WinRE by going to the Advanced Startup settings menu. Right-click your Windows Start menu button and click Settings
  • From here, click Update & Security > Recovery > Restart now. This will boot your PC into your Windows 10 advanced boot menu.

You can also boot into the Windows Recovery Environment by aborting the Windows 10 start-up process at least twice. Once WinRE has loaded, you might need to click Advanced Options> Troubleshoot to access the various included recovery tools.

If your Windows installation is beyond repair, then you may need to wipe and Windows PE for Windows Windows 10 instead.

How To Create A Bootable Windows PE ISO Under Linux

Windows PE (Windows Preinstallation Environment, also known as WinPE) is a lightweight Windows version that runs from memory and can be booted from the network, used to deploy workstations and servers or for system maintenance.

Windows PE

Windows PE can may be needed for various reasons, like installing Windows from the network, booting Windows PE from the network or simply running some Windows application without installing Windows or using WINE.

I needed a live Windows PE ISO to be able to update my Dell BIOS, because all the other methods of updating the BIOS on my Dell XPS L702x from Linux I found had failed (and I don't have Windows installed on my laptop). Whatever reason you have to build a customized bootable Windows PE for Windows PE image, here's how to create it from Linux.

Create a bootable Windows PE ISO in Linux

1. To create a bootable Windows PE Windows PE for Windows in Linux (no Windows machine is necessary), you need a Windows 7 or 8 DVD or you can download the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) ISO from Microsoft's website (for free).

Download the ISO (KB3AIK_EN.iso) in your home folder.

In my test, I've used the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) ISO and not a Windows 7 / 8 DVD.

2. The live Windows PE ISO will be created using Wimlib so you need to install this tool. In Ubuntu, you can install the latest Windows 7 professional product key to download iso by using the main WebUpd8 PPA:

If you're not using Ubuntu, search for Wimlib / wimtools in your Linux distribution repositories or, alternatively, download the source from SourceForge.

3. Only if you've you've downloaded the Windows AIK (KB3AIK_EN.iso) ISO from Microsoft's website:

Firstly, you need to create a folder where we'll mount the downloaded WAIK (KB3AIK_EN.iso) ISO:

Then, mount KB3AIK_EN.iso using the following command:

4. Now let's create the customized live Windows PE ISO. For this, we'll use the "mkwinpeimg" tool included in Wimlib:

a)If you've used a Windows 7 or 8 DVD:

b)If you've used the WAIK (KB3AIK_EN.iso) ISO:
you can now unmount the WAIK ISO:

Here's what the "mkwinpeimg" options above do:
  • "--iso" - it specifies the tool to make an ISO image instead of a disk image
  • "--windows-dir=/mnt/windows" - if using the Windows 7 or 8 DVD only: this is the Windows mount path, usually /mnt/Windows or /mnt/Windows7 but check the path to make sure
  • "--waik-dir=$HOME/waik" - if using the WAIK ISO only: this specifies the path to where the WAIK ISO was mounted, $HOME/waik in our case.

If you want to add some files to the bootable Windows PE image, you can use "--overlay=/path/to/some/folder" (replace /path/to/some/folder with the path to a folder that contains the files you want included on the custom Windows PE image) - this will included all the files under /path/to/some/folder on the Windows PE image, in the root directory (under X:).

Run "man mkwinpeimg" in a terminal for more info on mkwinpeimg and all the available options.
